Little Reminders to Help You and Your Packer
1. Call and reserve your wilderness permit with the park service at Mather Ranger Station
( 209 ) 372 - 0740. Because of security reasons: Hetch Hetchy Road is closed between 9 Pm. and 7 Am. You can pick up your reserved wilderness permit when you go through the Mather Ranger Station, plus pay the park entry Fee of $20 per car ( Good for 7 Days).
2. The weight limit per pack horse is 150 pounds
3. A six horse limit per packer on spot trips because of leading stock one way.
4. All stock used must have packer, no riding double. All riders must be at least 7 years of age. We reserve the right to limit weight of riders.
5. Upon arrival for trip, check in at Mather Pack Station. We usually have stock at Hetchy Loading Zone around 7a.m
6. On backpacker parties, some backpacks must be turned upside down in our pack bags.
7. Sleeping bags should be rolled tighly (long way) and personal gear in duffle or plastic bags.
8. Axes, shovel or saws should have cardboard tied around blade.
9. Fishing rods must be in metal or stout cases with secure ends.
10. Our pack boxes are standard size (9 3/4" x 19 1/4" x 16" deep), two 5 gal. square cans fit in each side.
11. Bring canned and bottled goods separated from soft packaged items and perishables. Leave eggs in grocers cartons.
12. Make menu for each day of trip. This can include fresh meat for the first few days. Freeze solid and wrap well in newspapers and canvas. Fresh vegetables can be kept easily with little extra care when packing and in camp. Many people crave sweets more when in the high country. Don't forget to provide for your packer if he stays overnight with you. Meals can be packed in separate bags with the date on them. This saves time and confusion in camp.
13. We can provide you with saddle pockets for your lunch, jacket, small canteen or raingear to be carried on your horse. We do not suggest day packs carried on your back while horseback.
